Banned Books Week Readout: Immigration and Race
Get caught engaging in a revolutionary act: reading banned or challenged books! Whether you are participating in Banned Books Bingo or not, we want you to join us for one or more of these public affirmations of liberty, each hosted by a different community group. Those groups will share a little bit about how attacks on intellectual freedom affect the group or issue they focus on, but the bulk of these events will be dedicated to quiet reading to demonstrate resistance to the wave of challenges in schools and libraries across the country.
This session’s focus is on books banned or challenged on the grounds of containing content about immigration status and/or race. It will be held in front of the Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates, 117 East Elm Street.
NOTE: Books you bring don’t need to have been formally challenged or banned anywhere! If they fit the theme of the session, then someone, somewhere, is sure to consider them “controversial,” and thus they are at risk of challenge.
