Penn Yan Public Library invites you to join critical explorations of critical books, a few chapters at a time. This year\u2019s pick is CASTE: THE ORIGINS OF OUR DISCONTENTS by Isabel Wilkerson, one of the seminal works in global race and class commentary from the past few years.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power\u2014which groups have it and which do not.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people\u2019s lives and behavior and the nation\u2019s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Isabel Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people\u2014including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball\u2019s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others\u2014she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

We will read this book in small parts starting April 21, meeting on first and third Mondays of each month to discuss what we\u2019ve learned and what the text has raised in us.\u00a0 For this session, please read parts 6 & 7.<\/p>\n
